Who is a Lecturer?

Lecturers are teachers who teach academic and vocational subjects to undergraduate and postgraduate students in the university. A lecturer can also be referred to as an academic expert who is hired to teach on a full- or part-time basis. They may also conduct research

Duties of a Lecturer

  • Interviewing course applicants.
  • Lecture planning, preparation and research.
  • Contact and teaching time with students.
  • Checking and assessing students' work.
  • Encouraging personal development via tutorial or pastoral work.
  • Invigilating examinations.
  • Attending staff meetings.

Educational Qualification

You'll need a good degree in a subject that's relevant to what you want to lecture in. For almost all disciplines, you'll also need a PhD in a related area.

For more vocational courses you'll usually need several years' experience of working in the relevant field, as well as a degree or professional qualification. In these instances, significant expertise in the profession may be just as valuable as a PhD.

Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE) and Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education is an added advantage.

Masters Degree in relevant subject.

Skills

Ability to work well with a range of people, organizational skill, teamwork, expertise in a particular subject area or areas, excellent written and verbal communication skills, excellent presentation skills.
